Pokken Tournament Gameplay Reveals Support Pokemon, Power-Up Abilities

Earlier today, Bandai Namco revealed three new characters for Pokken Tournament, as well as some brand new gameplay.

Although an official upload hasn’t been made, we’ve gotten the new gameplay (featured above) via Youtuber MaxEzzy. You’ll want to skip to roughly 17:00 minutes in, to get right to the gameplay.

It’s worth noting the newly confirmed Pokemon are Gardevoir, Suicune, and Pikachu. The arcade game is also going to use NES-like controllers, instead of your traditional joystick and buttons. This controller is definitely not a final design, so expect it to change later on.

While many fans expected the game to be a “2.5D” fighter much like Bandai Namco’s own Tekken series, Pokken Tournament instead allows you to roam around freely in a circular “field phase” arena of sorts. While in this “3D field action” mode, the camera will pull away a bit to give you  greater field of vision. When you confront the opposing Pokemon, you’ll enter the “duel phase” mode, where the camera zooms in and leans towards the side, like a traditional fighting game. From here, you can expect Pokken Tournament to behave like most fighting games.

There confirmed buttons for the game thusfar: heavy attack, light attack, Pokemon jump, and support Pokemon. An attack beats a throw, a throw overcomes guarding, and guarding beats attacks, in a simple check-system. If you continue to guard for prolonged times, your shield will continue to degrade (this was compared to the shields in Super Smash Bros.). Each Pokemon will be able to unleash a large “burst” attack, when they’re in “Resonance Burst Mode,” which can apparently only be used once per match.

On the menu screen, you can clearly see that options for local PVP and online PVP are currently available, meaning you can play against local opponents, as well as some in other arcades. Pokken Tournament is going to use Namco’s Banapass cards in Japanese arcades, while a home console release for the game isn’t confirmed.

Finally, support Pokemon were confirmed in the game, which currently include: Lapras, Emolga, Snivy and Fenniken.
