Bloodborne Producer Explains Chalice Dungeons In New Video

Of all the features that From Software’s PS4 exclusive Dark Souls “spin-off” Bloodborne possesses, perhaps the most misunderstood (and yet, most awesome) feature is the game’s “chalice dungeons”. Sometimes described as randomly generated and confused with that of a roguelike, the chalice dungeons have been a frequently talked about topic on forums where Bloodborne is discussed. That being the case, Masaaki Yamagiwa, the game’s producer, has laid out the details in a video posted to Sony’s Youtube channel.

The chalice dungeons are underground ruins found beneath the city of Yharnam. It’s a vast area with many different levels and layers. The concept we had in mind for chalice dungeons is that they change depending on who is looking at them, rather than like the procedurally generated maps in “roguelike” games.

With the chalice dungeon, we want to emphasize two things: by introducing procedurally generated areas that keep changing, we can keep providing gamers with fresh gameplay to enjoy, and we can keep offering varied maps so that they always need to think about new strategies. Secondly, we want players to share their experiences freely.

The video is slightly over four minutes long and should be of interest to those having problems waiting until Bloodborne‘s late-March release dates.
