Previously, Square Enix filed a trademark for Mevius Final Fantasy, and most of you guessed it was a smartphone game.

If you guessed smartphone, you were right. However, the Famitsu reveal (featured above) describes the game as a “traditional” Final Fantasy game. It’s not a remake of an older game, but it is related to previous entries in the series, as far as style goes.

The game’s reveal comes alongside the 27th anniversary of the original Final Fantasy in Japan, so in celebration Famitsu managed to get Final Fantasy creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi, to speak with Square Enix’s Yoshinori Kitase in an interview focused on the entire series, and the new game.

Kitase confirmed that he’s at the head of development on Mevius Final Fantasy, with other staffers from previous (numbered) games in the Final Fantasy series.

Mevius Final Fantasy is coming to both iOS and Android in Japan some time next spring.
