Castle in the Darkness is Like a Smörgåsbord of Zelda, Metroid, Megaman, Kirby, and More

Nicalis has confirmed they’re putting another promising indie game onto Steam in the form of Castle in the Darkness, which is set for a release sometime this summer.

You can have the multifaceted hybrid assault your face with layers of nostalgia by playing the above video. If the art looks somewhat familiar and not like “just another pixelated indie game”, that’s because it’s helmed by the lead artist behind The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth.

The story within Castle in the Darkness is set within an expansive world that is heavily inspired by the golden era of 2D platformers and action/adventure games, featuring a robust number of abilities for you to level the hero with. One of the most notable aspects of the game’s development is that it was largely handled by Matt Kap, a pixel artist at Nicalis.

There are over a hundred weapons, armor, and magic to collect, as well as more than 50 bosses to overcome, and over a hundred different enemies to slay on your path to save the Kingdom of Alexandria. An interesting bit from the press release mentions a “fast-paced, chiptune soundtrack”, which I would have preferred over the somewhat mediocre rock/metal music.

For now, you can vote for Castle in the Darkness on Steam Greenlight. We’ll keep you guys posted.
