Not content with all the peripherals they’ve already been putting out between the Wii, Wii U, and the 3DS, Nintendo is setting their sights on the popular NFC powered figurines that catapulted Skylanders into the mega millions, both in dollars and in software sales.

Confirmed via a financial results briefing that went public today, the new technology is being codenamed Nintendo Figurine Platform, and it will be set into motion for both the Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS. The new technology has been in development since last year, and Nintendo hopes to show off the related games and figurines that are being developed for it at E3 this year.

The Nintendo Figurine Platform infared reader will be released for the 3DS, enabling users to scan in their figurines across both the Wii U and the 3DS. The figurine can apparently read and write data across multiple games, opening up the option for players to develop completely customized figurines. In a series of tweets from analyst David Gibson (who was in attendance during the briefing), the technology was demonstrated with a Mario figurine that was being used across a multitude of titles.

Nintendo recently posted a 46.4 billion yean ($456 million USD) operating loss that is mostly due to floundering Wii U sales. If this technology takes off in any way like Skylanders did, you better believe that you’ll start seeing memes with Wii U’s printing money, just like we saw with the DS.
