DracinMorte: A New 3rd Person ARPG

Kickstarters are a dime a dozen now, with most triple-A developers unwilling or simply unable to make the kind of RPGs people are asking for. Of all the current crop of kickstarter roleplaying games, there’s one that was recently revealed that, in my opinion, stands out from the rest. With its lack of retro-styled pixels and a bevy of modern CRPG options to abuse and manipulate, Mad Labyrinth Studios’ DracinMorte isn’t your typical garage game.

Also asking for votes on their Steam Greenlight page, DracinMorte’s developers seem to have a good idea of what character progression within a modern CRPG should feel like. In a very clever move, the game’s designers have stated that a system will be in place that changes not just the look and model of your character as you level-up, but will also drastically change his animations and the way he walks, attacks and responds to damage. Though Gothic did this to some extent, I always wanted to see it done again in a more plainly visible way.

The game’s design document on Kickstarter reads like a laundry list of every critical CRPG feature discovered within the last 20 years. Crafting, skill trees, companions that develop relationships with the player…if they can actually deliver on their promises they may fill the void that Piranha Bytes left behind when they started watering down their Gothic formula. I for one can’t wait to see them try.

There are plenty of slots left on the reward tiers of their Kickstarter page, so now would be the time to fund them to their $120,000 goal if you’re interested. There is even a short demo to toy around with if you’re curious. Though it looks (and moves) pretty rough right now, it seems as if Mad Labyrinth knows what they are doing and the weather isn’t the only thing hot down in Atlanta.
