Keiichiro Toyama is easily one of the fore-fathers of the horror genre within video games, pioneering titles like Silent Hill and Siren, only to recently make a much less scary game (but equally just as great) called Gravity Daze for the Playstation Vita.

In an interview with Famitsu, Toyama has revealed that he seems ready to return to making horror games after working on Gravity Daze for years. Although a new Gravity Daze game is being developed, Toyama is tight lipped about it, saying:

“Right now all I can say is that we’re working on it with the opinions and expectations of the fans who’ve played the original Gravity Daze in mind.”

When the interviewer pointed out that Gravity Daze spent years in development, and that the game was a big shift in themes from the Siren series, Toyama interrupted, saying:

“It may seem like that from an outside perspective, but the planning process between both Siren and Gravity Daze is quite similar. It starts with creating a town, then supplanting an observing protagonist into the game. From there, you can develop the game to have the protagonist be involved with a big event. The visuals and themes are different, but the process is the same.”

He was then asked if there was a particular game he would like to make, and Toyama replied with:

“I’ve been working on horror games for so long, now I’ve accumulated a lot of ideas and concepts that would be great for a horror game. So, I would like to make another horror game.”

Toyama talked about how in recent years, games with big budgets and bigger package titles are making it harder to develop good horror games. In his eyes, the horror genre works best as a AA game, not a bloated, AAA game. He went on to say:

“I’d like to take a different approach to development and make it a digital only title.” He continue by saying: “If I could make a digital only game that can be cleared in a couple hours, something like Journey, while also offering an terrifying horror experience – I’d love to try something like that.”

So there you have it – Toyama wants to make another horror game, but the real question is if this will come alongside the new Gravity Daze game.
